Dr. R. Nagesh has built an inspiring career spanning more than three decades in agricultural engineering, water resource management, and technical education. Combining engineering expertise with a passion for teaching, he has made significant contributions to irrigation development, sustainable agriculture, and professional training in Tamil Nadu. His journey reflects a lifelong commitment to innovation, public service, and knowledge sharing.
Born on 8 April 1963 in Erode, Tamil Nadu, he was raised in a family that valued education and discipline. His father, C. Ramakrishnan, served as a bank manager, while his mother, Manjula Ramakrishnan, was a homemaker who also worked as an evening teacher during his childhood. As the eldest among three siblings, he developed leadership qualities early in life and pursued academic excellence throughout his education.
After completing his schooling in Coimbatore district, he earned a B.Sc. in Physics in 1983, graduating as a university topper. Driven by an interest in engineering and agriculture, he joined Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore, where he completed his Bachelor of Engineering in Agricultural Engineering in 1987. His academic performance earned him a campus placement as a Survey Engineer with Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd. (JISL), Jalgaon, where he gained valuable industry experience.
In 1989, he joined the Department of Agricultural Engineering, Government of Tamil Nadu, beginning a distinguished public service career that lasted over 31 years. During his tenure, he served in several key assignments, including nearly a decade with the Parambikulam Aliyar Project, where he gained extensive experience in irrigation and water resource management.
One of his most notable achievements came during the implementation of the Tamil Nadu Irrigated Agriculture Modernization and Water Bodies Restoration and Management (TNIAMWARM) project, a World Bank-supported initiative involving eight government departments. Drawing on his earlier industry experience, he pioneered the implementation of micro-irrigation systems and designed an innovative Water Sharing Concept for horticultural cropping patterns. The initiative proved highly successful and became a model for efficient water utilization in garden-based agriculture.
His expertise also extended to academic and international assignments. Between 2014 and 2015, he served on deputation at the Irrigation Management Training Institute (IMTI), Tiruchirappalli, where he coordinated the CLIMA-Adapt Project, funded by the Government of Norway. During this period, he completed his Master of Engineering in Integrated Water Management, graduating as a medalist. His contributions to technical education earned him recognition as the Best Faculty Member at the Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI), Aurangabad, in 2015.
Throughout his career, he remained a sought-after resource person for various educational and professional institutions, delivering lectures on agricultural engineering, soil and water conservation, irrigation management, and soft skills. His ability to simplify complex technical concepts earned widespread appreciation among engineers and trainees.
Promoted as Assistant Executive Engineer in 2020, he continued to contribute to the agricultural sector while also serving in leadership roles. However, his passion for education inspired him to opt for Voluntary Retirement (VRS) in 2021, allowing him to pursue teaching full-time. He later completed his Doctorate in Training of Trainers (TOT) Skills, further strengthening his contribution to professional education.
His dedication to teaching has earned several accolades, including a Lifetime Achievement Award for Teaching Skills from Namma Bharat Sevai, Chennai. He is also expected to receive the Indian Iconic Award in Gurugram in July 2026, recognizing his lifelong contributions to agricultural engineering, technical education, and sustainable development.
Today, he continues to inspire students, engineers, and professionals through his expertise, leadership, and unwavering commitment to learning, proving that true success lies in combining knowledge with service to society.
